Community garden blossoms in Carmarthen
The community garden project funded by the Postcode Lottery last year is now in full bloom at our Furnace Banc project in Carmarthenshire. The development of the garden was funded with a £1,306 award from the People’s Postcode Lottery last May. The project was aimed at building the skills and confidence of residents receiving both supported accommodation and floating support.
The money was spent on a range of plants, tools and garden furniture to begin the community garden, providing the residents with practical experience in horticulture, planning and project management.
Months of hard work have paid off. There is now a large decking area with seating, a small pond with reeds and water lilies and an abundance of bedding plants, pots and flowers where the residents and local community members relax, socialise and work on the community space.
Working on the project has helped the residents make positive changes to their lives, building their skills and confidence and helping to develop relationships and integrate within the Carmarthen community. The project has also been awarded a prize in our Gardening Competition, taking 2nd place in the Community Garden category.
Speaking of the project Ernie Johnson, Furnace Banc Project Leader said: “Having supported residents throughout the development of the community garden I have seen first-hand the level of commitment given to the project and the development of the residents’ skills and confidence over the last year. Everyone has worked well as a team to complete the garden and all have taken pride in contributing to the wider community. We would once again like to thank the People’s Postcode Lottery for helping us to complete this exciting and worthwhile project”.
