Gwalia and Alabaré supporting ex-service personnel
We're helping preserve community heritage and providing support for ex-armed forces personnel at the same time through our partnership with Christian charity Alabaré.
We have bought the former Clydach War Memorial Hospital and will be working with Alabaré, as part of their Wales Homes for Veteran Initiative, to provide accommodation for injured or traumatised ex-servicemen and women.
Our plans for the site encompass the historical and emotional connection residents have with the hospital which was built for the community by the community, through contributions from residents to support veterans returning from the WWI.
Four apartments within the historic frontage will form part of the charity’s Wales Homes for Veterans initiative. The remainder of the building will be demolished to make way for new houses, to meet the demand for affordable accommodation within the Clydach area, and bungalows for older people or those who are in need of level access accommodation.
We are in the process of obtaining Welsh Government approval to start works and hope to begin onsite before the end of the year.
Richard Davies, Executive Director of Customer Services said: "We will work with the local community to ensure that safe access to the War Memorial is available during the construction period.
"I am pleased that we have been able to secure a partnership with Alabaré that both safeguards the War Memorial and acts as a living tribute to the men and women who’ve given so much in service to their country."
