Gwalia team Keep on Supporting People
The Gwalia team behind a project which helps bring about positive changes to the lives of those affected by a number of issues have shown a local AM what can be achieved if we ‘Keep on Supporting People’.
The staff at Tŷ Trosiad and Brynderw Road invited Newport East AM John Griffiths and Newport West Assembly candidate Jayne Bryant to see for themselves how the projects are helping people in the local community make positive changes to their lives.
Gwalia project leader Dafydd Davies said the two Newport City projects provide both an accommodation-based and support service.
He said: “With the dedicated team’s help and support, people become motivated to change. Staff help break down the barriers causing homelessness and help all of our clients develop the skills for independent living to enable them to move on.
“Support is also given to help services users into employment, training or education. Early intervention is the key to preventing problems from spiraling out of control. The Let’s Keep on Supporting People funding has played an enormous part in tackling problems before they escalate.”
Our Director of Housing and Support Andrew Vye said as a preventative service, the Supporting People project has helped reduce the pressures felt by other public services in Newport.
He said: “For example the demand on social services, the criminal justice system, the NHS and the emergency services to name a few.”
John Griffiths AM said: “It was great to go along and see the good work that Gwalia are involved in at Ty Trosiad, and in my constituency at Brynderwen Road.”
Ms Bryant added: “It’s important that we continue to support these excellent projects, both in Newport and across Wales, to ensure that those who need it are given the support to make those positive changes.”
