Our first Neath Port Talbot partnership care home is completed
As Social Care week begins, we're celebrating the completion of our first new care home in partnership with Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council to re-provide residential and respite care in the county.
Llys y Seren (translation: Place of the Stars) in Baglan, Port Talbot, is the first of four new care homes to be built in the ‘Improving Residential Care’ programme. On 16th June our Chief Executive, Michael Williams, welcomed Neath Port Talbot Council Leader, Cllr. Ali Thomas to the 60 bed care home for a tour.
The £5.7 million development has a dementia friendly design; 6 suites each with 10 ensuite bedrooms, a communal lounge and kitchen facilities are set around a courtyard garden. Each sensory garden provides stimulation through colour, scents and wildlife in a safe outdoor setting, while memory boxes outside each bedroom act as a trigger to remind residents of the location of their room and while also encouraging positive memories.
Michael said "Llys y Seren is the first care home to be delivered through our partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council to improve older people’s services throughout the county. I am proud to be here to see the culmination of a lot of hard work and am sure that this state of the art building will have an extremely positive impact on the lives of both residents and staff."
Residents from existing Min yr Afon and Morfa Afan care homes in Port Talbot will move into Llys y Seren on 23rd June.
Cllr. Ali Thomas OBE, Leader of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council said "One of the Council’s main priorities is to maximise choice and independence for older people in Neath Port Talbot. Providing residential care homes which are fit for the 21st century and offer excellent care in first class surroundings is an important part of this.
“I am delighted that our Improving Residential Care partnership with Gwalia has delivered this significant investment in care for older people and am impressed by the high specification of this building."
Work will start on the next development in the Improving Residential Care partnership, at Dwr y Felin Road, Neath in July 2014.
