Tea Party is 25 years in the Making
The best silver and china was brought out at Gwalia’s Ynysderw House to celebrate its Silver anniversary with its original manager and one of its first tenants on October 27th.
It wasn’t just tea for two, tenants from each of Gwalia’s apartments for the over 55s were invited to a High Tea to celebrate with Scheme manager Angela Harvey and one of the first tenants Olive Williams.
Little did Angela know as she was helping Olive move in all those years ago she would still be working with one her first tenants 25 years on.
“It has been such a pleasure working here,” said Angela. “We are one big community who respect each other’s privacy. But if there is an excuse for a knees up we will join in. Everyone has pitched in today to make sure we celebrated in style.”

The 85-year-old said: “I lived opposite here all of my life and saw Ynysderw being built. I’d been living alone since I lost my mother and the house was getting too much to manage. I was so excited to move in and I’ve loved every minute of living here since. It’s one big community here, I can have company if I want it or I can have my privacy. I have the best of both worlds!”.
Situated in Pontardawe, Ynysderw House takes its name from the former Tinplate Works which was a major employer in the town between the 1840s to the 1960s.
The apartments consist of 30 self-contained flats with communal lounge, library and hairdressers. Designed to take some of the stress out of running a home, rent at Ynysderw House is inclusive of heating, hot water and maintenance bills.
Our Director of Care, Mark Lewis has praised Angela’s 25 years-service to the Ynysderw community.
He said: “Angela is well respected and loved by all of her tenants, it is evident from the turnout today. She really makes everyone feel at home from the minute they move in. But she’s not only there for the tenants she’s always on hand to support Gwalia’s other scheme managers too.”
